Fine Motor
From completing everyday tasks
such as dressing, eating, and maintaining personal hygiene to performing more
sophisticated tasks like writing, typing, or using computers and smart
technology, fine motor skills are essential to gaining independence in the
modern world. While these skills are typically developed early in childhood,
individuals with sensory processing
disorders often require more support in improving
their fine motor skills, while adults with dementia and
other cognitive disorders may lose their skills without adequate nurturing.
At Experia USA, we are
dedicated to providing sensory products
and solutions for those with barriers to
their development, working closely with occupational therapists to create
multifaceted equipment that facilitates activities to enhance fine motor
skills.
Sensory Activities for Fine Motor Development
As fine motor skills are
primarily used to control the small muscles in our fingers, hands, and wrists,
populating your multisensory space with tactile equipment
is an excellent way to encourage sensory-motor development. Our strands of fiber optic lights are
incredibly versatile, their flexible plastic casing giving users the freedom to
bend and wrap them around their fingers, exercising their fine motor skills
while inspiring calm with
their color-changing lights.
For an interactive sensory
experience, our range of wall panels invites users to place their hands and
fingers against illuminated sections to play sounds and music from concealed speakers. Placing their
hands against the sound wall will
produce a range of musical notes, while our soundboard can be
customized with different sounds and images, such that users can improve their
fine motor skills and their understanding of cause and effect simultaneously.
In our effort to make our
flagship range of IRiS Wireless equipment accessible to users of all ages
and abilities, we have created numerous IRiS Talker controllers
so that users can engage with their environment in various ways. While the IRiS color selector presents
users with multiple colorful buttons to press, the Lightwand and maze controller allow
users to control their environment by gripping a joystick or rocking a ball
around a maze, respectively. These novel control methods give users an
opportunity to exercise their fine motor skills.
Deciding how to incorporate
larger products in your space alongside more intimate sensory motor development
equipment can be challenging, which is why Experia USA offers free room design services
to every customer across every sector. Whether you need our insight on a sensory
space at home, at school, or in a healthcare environment,
